Xaibouathong district is a rural area with a 39.2% poverty rate, limited access to adequate sanitation (47.6%) and clean water sources (44.7%), and a high level of vulnerability among the Phu Thai ethnic group, who account for 92% of the local population. Children face significant challenges, including a stunting rate of 29.7% and a wasting rate of 9.8%. Plastic pollution severely threatens health, livelihoods and the environment, with burning waste contributing to emissions and respiratory issues.

Project content
The project organises the following community-led activities across three villages, supported by village action groups sanctioned by the Xaibouathong District Education and Sports Office:
- Build and maintain a school-based football pitch using local materials (bamboo goalposts, lime markings) and project-supplied netting, balls and kit
- Deliver weekly after-school football coaching for 110 children, integrating environmental themes
- Host eco-themed football tournaments and events to engage young people and communities
- Conduct youth-led village clean-ups, recycling/upcycling workshops and environmental education sessions on waste management and health impacts
- Plant and nurture 1,000 trees
- Launch the Plastic-Free Village challenge, supported by the Lao Women’s Union and the Lao Youth Union
- Host three green festivals showcasing upcycled crafts, student performances and community achievements
- Hold monthly village action group meetings focusing on planning, oversight and sustainability
- Use KeeeX Photo Proof Pro for monthly visual reporting, ensuring transparent progress tracking
